For Immediate Release
Lowell, MA. – The Department of Music at the University of Lowell Massachusetts has announced a change in the highly regarded Sound Recording Technology program. In September 2017, Dr. Brandon Vaccaro became the Coordinator of Sound Recording Technology. Dr. Vaccaro succeeds Dr. William Moylan, who served as coordinator of the program since 1983.
“I am delighted to turn over the oversight and guidance of the SRT program to Dr. Brandon Vaccaro,” said Dr. William Moylan, Professor of Music and SRT Coordinator from 1983-2017. “He has a deep skill set for administration and enough similarity of vision to my own to give consistency to the program, as well as his own individual sense of the discipline and needs of the program. I know the program will be well served, and should continue to thrive at the forefront of education in our field. For me personally, I feel liberated from keeping a continuous eye on the program. After over three decades of directing the program I will finally have the time to pursue my research, writing and recording projects. This is an exciting new chapter for sound recording technology at the University of Massachusetts Lowell.”
Dr. Vaccaro joined the UMass Lowell faculty in 2014. As a composer, Dr. Vaccaro has received commendations, awards, or commissions from The Playground, ASCAP/SCI, Iowa State University Carillon Festival, New York Youth Symphony’s First Music program, the University of Denver, and the University of Colorado. His film work has been recognized by the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (2012 Heartland Emmy winner, 2014 Heartland Emmy nominee) and by the Motion Picture Sound Editors (2012 MPSE Golden Reel nominee). Dr. Vaccaro is an active performer in chamber and popular venues and as an improviser in both solo and ensemble settings. Dr. Vaccaro is also a managing editor for the Journal on the Art of Record Production. He has been a freelance producer and audio engineer since 1994.
“I’m incredibly excited about this opportunity, and I look forward to serving our students, colleagues, and the SRT community as coordinator,” said Dr. Vaccaro. “The program here is such a special place. The sense of community amongst our faculty, students, and alumni is the strongest I’ve experienced.”
The Sound Recording Technology (SRT) program at UMass Lowell has been training successful audio professionals for over thirty years. Alumni of the program have achieved the highest levels of success in many audio-related industry segments including music production, audio for visual and interactive media (film, television and video games), event audio/live sound, broadcast audio, audio system design, acoustic consultation and design, audio software and hardware design, audio education, and consumer audio fields. The program combines studies in physics, electrical engineering, computer science, and advanced mathematics with traditional studies in music and numerous courses related to the art and technology of recording. Small class sizes ensure that students work directly with the permanent faculty throughout their SRT studies. The SRT permanent faculty is made up of prestigious scholars and practitioners including Dr. William Moylan, Alex U. Case, Dr. John Shirley, and Dr. Brandon Vaccaro. In addition to the SRT faculty, the Music Department also includes well-known scholars in the field of recorded music studies including department chair Dr. Alan Williams and Dan Walzer.
